Contact Prints Outside/Inside location photography and Studio Photography

This contact print is my Inside Location photography shoot I wasn't able to take as many images as I would of liked too because my camera battery was low and I wanted to save the charge for the studio shoot. The images I took on the stairs I am pleased with I think the images make the models face look soft. To shoot the images on the stairs I shot at eye level using the rule of thirds. I didn't shoot from any other angle as I prefer more centralised images and think angles don't work well with models. The images that I took near the window I am not that fond of I found it hard to get the correct camera settings and found it hard to focus my camera.

This contact print is my Outside Location photography shoot again I didn't enjoy this shoot I thought that the lighting outside was very dull and I didn't find many backdrops for the portrait images that I liked. I only like two of my images I shot on the outside shoot. again the majority of my images where take central at eye level.

Target Audience

My target audience is more for teenagers and adults. I think my poster could be used for marketing as it could be trying to promote healthier lifestyles to the public or it could be promoting a new local fruit shop etc. there is not cultural influence on my image at all. I kept it plain and simple. My idea was very based on my research that I did on Pinterest.

Favourite Light box images.

Light Box shoot

I thought this shoot was fun to do and I really liked the lighting. However I struggled with a lot of the pictures as I kept ending up getting shadows in my images which changed the colour of the lighting box. I found this hard to get rid of and tried my best to get each shot as clear as I could. I am happy with the out come of some of my images.

Night time shoot

I wasn't a fan of the night time shoot at all. The lighting was awful to work with and I didn't enjoy doing this task. This shoot would have worked 10x better in the day with natural lighting.

Evaluation

Evaluation.
For this project I chose to photograph fruit as it is easy to get hold of and really elegant to photograph. I really enjoyed this project, at first I didn’t think I would of had any interest in food photography but I have found out through the project that I very interested by food photography and have found a love for it. I enjoyed the fact I had my idea from the very start and knew exactly what I was going to be doing as I was very keen to get started. My favourite task was making posters with my images. I didn’t really enjoy the shoots of the sweets we did at college as I wouldn’t particularly choose to photograph things like that. But it was good for experience. If I did thing project again I would try doing another shoot like my first but using exotic fruits that you don’t see every day. I would have also liked to have completed another shoot based more around the cutlery and crockery as I did a lot of research into them I however didn’t find the time to do a second shoot which I am disappointed about. For my shoot I used different angles such as bird’s eye view, worm’s eye and eye level. I shot very central images again as this is my preferred technique I seem to use a lot when I do a shoot. I had a lot of inspiration for my shoot from Pinterest mainly. I think this website is a wonderful site to find photographers on which aren’t as well known. I found Linda Lomelino on Pinterest and she is my favourite food photographer i have found and I have taken a lot of inspiration from a lot of her work. In the future I will look forward to doing food photography again.

Poster Research

1.This poster has used a bold font and bright colours to catch the attention of the public. The layout of this poster is very simple. Its text and image on the poster are centralised and are the only focus. The poster is encouraging the public to eat healthier and is trying to get the message across that fast food is just as fast as getting something healthy.

2.This poster has used different types of font to make the poster more interesting and eye catching. The layout for this poster is pretty simple with all the attention focusing on the burger which they are trying to advertise to the public. The colour scheme is orange and brown tones. The colour scheme is very harmonising with the shades of colour in the burger. The poster is to advertise to the public and persuade them to buy this burger.

3.The font on this poster is clear and a plain but affective text. I think plain fonts work best with posters. The layout of the poster is central. The colours are very bright and fresh colours. This poster is trying to persuade the public to buy fresh food locally. I think the tree symbolises small businesses growing with the help of the community.

Food coloured fruits

Initially I was going to use food colouring to dye my fruits. But I didn't like the way the food colouring came out above is a few images to show how it looked.

Image Evaluation

1.I shot this image portrait at bird’s eye view as I knew this was the angle I would need to shoot at to get my images to look like this. I really like the colours and lighting in the image. I used all natural lighting. To get this effect of this image I bought various citrus fruits and cut them equally into circle shapes as best I could and then arranged them in different positions. I like how in this image then isn’t a border around the fruit I think this image is one of the best I shot and think it looks professional. I am very pleased with this image.

2.I shot this image landscape at bird’s eye view again this is my preferred angle for shooting images like these. I think it makes the image look better and lets you see all of what you are shooting. I have used all natural lighting on this image. Again I positioned the fruit to get a different image and zoomed out to get a border around the fruit. I am pleased with this image and think the surface I shot the fruit on was perfect I think it lightens the image up.

3.I shot this image landscape at bird’s eye view with all natural lighting. This image is very similar to the first image the reason to this is I wanted to see what the image would look like both landscape and portrait. I did rearrange the fruit so it’s not identical to the first image. I am happy with this image and think this style of shooting is my favourite. I like shooting at bird’s eye view with food. I think I prefer the images zoomed in on the fruit than the ones I didn’t zoom in on.

4.I shot this image portrait at bird’s eye view with all natural lighting. This image is different to the other three, I wanted to try props in this shoot and I had seen other food photographers using props such as cutlery, crockery and different backgrounds to shoot on. As I didn’t have many different backgrounds I chose to add things to my shoot I cut up an old bed sheet and used the cloth as a background to the fruit and I added the knife I used to cute the fruit into the shoot. I am pleased with the outcome and think the props I used worked well.

Posters

These images are my favourite four and this is why I chose to use them. I edited all the images to make them lighter as they wasn't as bright as I wanted them to be for the posters. For the first three images I used plain typography for these as I think this type of writing makes the images look sharper cleaner and more professional. For the fourth images I wanted to try out some fancy typography to see if I might have preferred it but I didn't think it worked as well as the plain typography. I don't think I would have changed any of my mock up's as they were to help me with what I wanted my final posters to look like.

Contemporary Research

Linda Lomelino

Linda Lomelino lives in a small town on the Swedish coast she started baking back in 2009 where she found he love for that and photography. She has made her own website which goes by the name ‘Call Me Cupcake’. Linda has gone on to release three cook books since 2012 her first book she released was ‘Lomelinos tÃ¥rtor’ (Lomelino's cakes) this was in April 2012. Her second book Lomelinos glass (Lomelino's ice cream) was released in May 2013, and her third book ‘Sweet food and photography’ was released in September 2014. Linda says her book ‘Sweet food and photography’ is full of ‘decorating techniques, styling and photography’. Linda does the photography for her books herself. I love Linda’s style of photography I love every image I have seen of hers and the way she has photographed her food has inspired me to be more creative and try different styles of photography. She has made me a lot more interested in food than I ever thought I would have been and I cant wait to go on and do my shoots.I found Linda's Photography on Pinterest. I think Pinterest is a great way to find out about photographers.

Historical Research

William Henry Fox Talbot

Fox developed the three primary elements of photography, developing, fixing and printing and accidently found out a lot about darkroom work and how we used it today. Fox was born on 11 February 1800 in Melbury, Dorset.

The image on the right is the only image Fox created on food. This image is very basic fruits we would see today but fruits such as the pineapple would have been very rare back then. I find the image interesting but his work on this particular image doesn't interest me. I however think this is because of the images being produced for food photography today is very interesting and fun and we have many cultures and many different beautiful looking fruits, vegetables, cakes and much more now to influence and help photographers to create such beautiful imagery.

Contemporary Research

Gareth Morgans

Gareth Morgans is a very highly experienced freelance food photographer; he has shot food for over a decade. Gareth has worked for all the big supermarket brands such as, ASDA, Morrison’s and The Co-operative he has worked for these big supermarkets shooting front covers for their food magazines. He has also done covers for a lot of food magazines such as Good Food, Delicious and many more.

My favourite topic of food he has shot has been his images for Fruit/Veg & Salads. I think the images are very striking and are focusing on just that topic I like the fact there aren’t many distractions from the food he has chosen to shoot. I like his images on preparing the veg with the different back grounds. His images of veg and fruits have inspired me to do two shoots one on vegetables and the other on fruits.

Contemporary Photography

Francesco Tonelli
Francesco was born in Italy his style of photography being food is because Francesco has a deep love and passion towards food. He was a former professional chef before he discovered his love for photography. He worked for La Cucina Italiana in Milan where he went on to style hundreds of dishes for them over the period of eight years.

I think Francesco’s images of foods are very beautiful his images are really inspiring. I like the ways he photographs. I really enjoyed his project ‘1 + 2 =3’. It was a really good idea and very interesting. I found the images he had done against different surfaces very inspiring. For his ‘1+2=3’ he took images of a plain dish then the ingredients that would be added then the final dish. I thought this was a brilliant idea and could be used really well in cook books and magazines.   The images of ‘Drinks’ that he has shot are really good images I like the lighting on all of

his images he has taken for this topic.

Photo shoot Planning

Planning

For my first shoot I want to do fruits. I want to use fruits like Oranges, Lemon and Limes. Fruits that when they a cut up are close to transparent. I want to use fruits like this because I want to add coloured dye into the fruits to change the colour. I want to use wood backgrounds and arrange my fruits on there. I got my inspiration for doing this from Linda Lomelino. I first found her image of the oranges with dye in on Pinterest I was fascinated by this and wanted to try it myself and thought it would make a perfect first shoot. Although I am using fruits it will be easy to add the dye too I also will try out other fruits and see if the colour will take. My plan is to shoot the images inside my house. I have big windows to let a lot of light threw so lighting shouldn't be a problem. I might try some shots outside but I would prefer to do my shoot inside with natural lighting. I want to shoot my images mostly at a bird’s eye view like Linda Lomelino did with her shoot, although I will try other angles also. Because I don’t want to completely copy Linda Lomelino I want to try and make my images completely different to hers. The time of day when the shoot should be shot is 8am-4pm this is because I want natural light. The best time to shoot would probably be 12pm-1pm.

For the second shoot I want to concentrate more on the background and the prop I will be using such and the cutlery and crockery more than the food I am photographing. I think this second shoot is important to do because I think the crockery and cutlery you use in an image completely makes the photo. I want to get beautiful crockery and cutlery for my second photo-shoot again I think I will probably do this shoot inside with natural lighting. Many of the food photographers I have seen have used very beautiful cutlery and crockery and I seemed to get most of my inspiration for this shoot off, of Pinterest. Time of day to shoot the images 8am
-4pm.
