High key lighting
High key lighting is a modern lighting technique that is based on using greys (mid-tone) and whites. Early film wasn't good at coping with the extreme blacks the lighting was arranged to ensure that the contracts were reduced. High key lighting today has become its own thing and is used very much for fashion and portrait photography.

Low key lighting
Low key is a style of photography the utilizes dark tones to create dramatic and beautiful images low key intensifies to contrast on a image by taking away the light to create striking images. To create low key images you have to be very selective of the lighting so that only the specific places you want to photograph are highlighted.  Low key created striking shadows for low key you have to manipulate your light to get the desired look.

Tiffany Schultz
Although she hasn’t shot a lot for both high key and low key I really like her work I particularly like the images she has shot of animals in high key and low the really work well. She has done quite a lot of portrait work with low key and high key which I don’t like and don’t think the images are as strong as the ones she has shot of the animals

Movie Research

Annabelle.
The movie I have chosen to create my photo shoot around is a super natural horror called Annabelle this movie is based around true events. It is based around a couple with a new born baby, and how there life suddenly changes when the doll ‘Annabelle’ is bought as a present for the leading character ‘Annabelle Wallis’ who plays the mother of the new born ‘Mia’.  This film is a spin off to the film ‘The Conjuring’ and was inspired by the real doll.

The story...

The characters ‘John’ and ‘Mia’ are expecting their first child. John buys Mia a doll that Mia has been looking for that night they hear a murder happening next door when Mia rings the police she is suddenly attacked by a female and male which are part of a cult that worship demons etc . The woman that is part of the cult kills herself and her blood rolls down onto the doll ‘Annabelle’ this then sets the movie off strange things start to happen such as the doll moving on its own and a fire happening which Mia thinks is to do with the doll she gets rid of it and they move houses only to come across Annabelle again. More and more unexplainable things happen and they start to look into the cult and demons. They find out there is a demon in Annabelle which wants a clean soul and is trying to get Mia’s child’s soul.

I am only choosing to do on film as I am finding it hard to come up with a lot of idea for this project. For my shoot I will use a model and dress them up as a human doll instead of using a prop doll. I am using a different storyline. For my studio shoot I will only be shooting head shots as I will only have an hour I think the studio is by far the best place to shoot head shots. For my location shoot I will use a basement. I want the location images to be very dark and may even edit them to be black and white as this will give a real dark effect.

Health and Safety in the studio

When using lighting in the studio remember how hot the get and not to handle them with your hands to save yourself from an injury. When you finish never lay cables or anything over hot lamps. Make sure that when the light fittings are getting changed that they're secure. If you move locations you need to insure that the protective cover is put back on the lights. The lights are also very bright and can damage eyes because of this to avoid this the photographer should help models to avoid this. Low light can also be a hazard as when in low light objects become less obvious to see. Extra attention needs to be used when using low light.

There are a lot of cables in the studio, which will need covering up. They need covering up so they will no longer become a tripping hazard. You can cover loose wires up with hazard tape or duck tape. There are many other tripping hazards such as camera stands, props and tripods. Make sure there is enough room for everyone to move around without any hazards.

You should never leave the studio unattended as anything could go wrong at any moment.

Water and liquids within the studio are very dangerous they don’t mix with the high voltage electricity. Make sure you always use dry hangs when you use any other the electrical equipment in the studio.

Make sure you know the location of the fire extinguisher in the studio make sure you know the correct fire extinguisher to use.
